How to Get the Pirate Shop Token in Fortnite

Last updated: 0/6 key figures verified

Quick answer

The only working method is opening chests in Battle Royale during Treasure Hunters. There is no quest, purchase or code path. Squads multiply your attempts because All squad members receive access, and vaults plus buried chests are worth detouring for because they pack several chests into one spot. Everything else you read online — generators, giveaways, “free token” sites — has no mechanism behind it.

Route 1: open chests in Battle Royale

Time cost: open-ended; no fixed unlock · Reliability: only confirmed route · Source: press and community reports

Chests are the source. Not floor loot, not supply drops, not fishing spots — the reports that name a container all name chests. That single fact drives every optimisation that follows: you are not trying to play well, you are trying to put your crosshair on as many chests per minute as possible.

In practice that means landing where chest density is highest, opening everything in the first thirty seconds, and moving on before the lobby collapses into fights you do not need. A calm player who opens forty chests and dies beats a careful player who wins with twelve.

The chest type matters less than the chest count. Standard chests; sprite chests and buried chests reported for other treasures. If you can only remember one instruction, remember this one: open it, do not walk past it because it is awkward to reach.

Route 2: fill your squad

Time cost: same as solo, four times the coverage · Reliability: multiplier, not a separate route · Source: IGN, VICE, player reports

All squad members receive access. That is the single biggest lever available to a normal player, because it converts one lucky chest into four accounts with access — and it means three teammates can be opening chests in other POIs while you do the same.

Two practical notes. First, random fill teammates count: you do not need friends online. Second, Reported to still receive it, so do not leave the match in frustration the moment you are knocked. Leaving is the one action that can cost you a drop you were about to be handed.

Spread out rather than landing as a clump. Four players in one POI share the same chest pool; four players in four POIs cover four pools.

Route 3: vaults, sprite chests and buried chests

Time cost: one vault key per attempt · Reliability: reported, not officially documented · Source: Reddit chest log, 2 Nov 2026

A vault is the densest chest cluster on the map: 4 rare chests plus sprite chests inside one small room. If a key drops near you, the detour pays for itself in chest count alone, regardless of whether the token cares about chest type.

Buried chests are the other reliable bonus. Reported yes for event treasures, and treasure maps point you straight at them. Pick maps up, clear your POI, then walk the markers rather than ignoring them.

One caution on destroying chests instead of opening them: reports differ on whether a broken chest still rolls the same way. Opening is the version everyone agrees on, so only break one when the alternative is skipping it.

Routes that do not work

Methods people ask about, and what the reporting actually says.
MethodStatusWhy
Bot LobbiesNo reportNo confirmed report of a token from a Bot Lobby
RankedNo reportNo confirmed report of a token from Ranked
Buying it with V-BucksNoThe token is not a shop item and has no listed price
Generator or "free token" sitesNoNo redemption mechanism exists outside the in-game shop
Quests or Battle Pass rewardsNoNothing in the quest or pass data mentions the token

The Bot Lobby and Ranked rows are deliberately marked pending rather than “no”. Absence of reports is not proof of impossibility, and it would be dishonest to state otherwise. What we can say is that nobody has documented a drop there, and that a mode with fewer real chests is a worse use of your time anyway.

Got nothing after a match? Work through this

  1. Confirm the match counted. Leaving before the drop resolves, or disconnecting, is the most common self-inflicted loss. Stay until the reward toast appears.
  2. Count your chests honestly. “I opened loads” usually means a dozen. If you are below twenty, the session was not a farming session.
  3. Check your squad tab. Access may already be on the account from a teammate's drop. Look for the shop banner before assuming you have nothing.
  4. Stop hunting in the same POI every game. If a spot is contested, you are losing chests to fights. Move to the second or third best location.
  5. Accept that no-shows are normal. Nothing about the drop rewards persistence. The rate is brutal and a dry streak tells you nothing except that you have not been lucky yet.

How long it takes

There is no honest way to promise a timeframe, because the community figure is 0.000143% per chest — and that number has no published sample size behind it. What we can say is that even very long grinds most often end without a drop. The drop rate page shows the arithmetic, including how many chests a 50% chance actually requires.

The most efficient session structure we found in player reports: land at the densest POI, open everything, rotate once to a second POI, then leave and requeue. Long matches with empty POIs are the most common way people spend hours for very few chests. The chest location ranking covers which POIs are worth that rotation.
